STUDENT RECITAL GUIDELINES
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
1. Please refer to the Recital Application page on the website.
2. Teachers should time each piece accurately.
3. Online application and payment must be sent before the scheduled deadline.
ELIGIBILITY:
1. AGE LIMITS:
STUDENT/HOLIDAY RECITAL – 18 or younger
ADULT RECITAL – 19 or older
2. Recitals are open to students of active or provisional MTAC-SF members in good standing.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
1. All standard repertoire is accepted. Simplified versions of the classics will not be accepted. Intermediate and advanced jazz pieces, including transcriptions, are also acceptable.
2. Students must play repertoire that is considered appropriate for Certificate of Merit exams.
3. Except for the Adult Recital and music written after 1950, piano and vocal solos must be performed from memory.
4. Total playing time per student may not exceed 7 minutes for CM levels Prep – 8, and 12 minutes for Level 9 and above.
RECITAL PROGRAM:
1. Applications are accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Special requests regarding program order are accepted but not guaranteed. No changes are allowed after the program is made. Student performers will be grouped into recitals of approximately one hour in length with a maximum of three recitals in one afternoon.
2. We encourage all members and their students to participate in the recitals. The recital coordinator will try to accommodate as many students as possible. In the case that there are too many applications, the recital coordinator may place a limit on the number of students that can be submitted from each studio. Students unable to be scheduled will have first priority for the next scheduled recital and the coordinator will notify the studio.
3. We cannot guarantee that studios with two or more students enrolled will perform in the same hour.
4. Students performing the same piece may be placed in different recital program hours.
5. It will be the teacher’s responsibility to supply accompanists if necessary.
6. The recital coordinator will have the final say regarding requests for exceptions to the above rules.
RECITAL ETIQUETTE:
1. It is the teacher’s responsibility to inform the students/parents of the proper recital manners and rules before arriving at the hall.
2. Performance Concert Attire:
Dresses must cover the shoulders and knees. Dress pants should be worn with modest blouse or collared shirt that covers the midriff and back. Ties and jackets are optional. Dress shoes are required for all performers; no athletic shoes or backless sandals (flip-flops). Note that it is difficult to pedal with platform shoes. No denim (blue jeans). Leggings are only allowed if opaque..
3. Teachers and students should arrive 15 minutes prior to the performance. If you are late, please enter the hall between performers.
4. Parents bringing young children will be expected to keep them quiet during the recital, and are advised to consider sitting near an exit.
5. We ask that you kindly remain during the entire program out of consideration for all performers.
6. Teachers are expected to coach the students on recital etiquette and stage presence, such as how to approach the piano, how to bow before and after playing, how to walk to the stage, how to pause in between pieces, etc.
